The Thoughts Get In

Rachel Rosen, a former BBC Radio host, is making a show about a mysterious find in a dig near Abel. She gives a brief potted history of Abel before heading towards the location of the dig.

Rachel plays tape of an interview with Sam, who tells her that the Abel team had been digging turnips when they found something metal. They assumed it was unexploded munitions – but instead uncovered what appeared to be gold.

Now Rachel plays an interview with Amelia, who claims some expertise in valuable artefacts – most of it gained in questionable ways. She says the uncovered object was a Roman eagle, but Rachel starts to feel faint before she can play the rest of the tape.

Rachel is hearing whispers, unsure if they’re in her mind, and believes a distant figure is following her. Disturbed, she plays more of the Amelia interview, which reveals that the eagle was found to be clutched in the dead hand of a skeleton – one with only half a head.

Rachel has found herself drawn to a cave where she hopes it will be cool and calm. But she remains rattled, and when she plays more recordings of Amelia and Sam, they aren’t saying what she remembers. She resolves to flee the cave.

Turned around and confused, Rachel is lost in the caves. The whispers are getting louder and as her broadcast fades, a figure with only half a head enters the cave…
